CHILKOOT BEAR EDUCATION AND RESEARCH STATION
Between 2000-2005, the Chilkoot Bear Education and Research Station (CBEARS) investigated the interactions between bears, salmon, and people along the Chilkoot River in Haines, Alaska. This formal research project was initiated through Utah State University under the advisment of renowned bear scientist Barrie Gilbert.
This research project was directed by Anthony Crupi and results from 2000 - 2003 can be read in his master's thesis titled, Foraging Behavior and Habitat Use Patterns of Brown Bears (Ursus arctos) in Relation to Human Activity and Salmon Abundance on a Coastal Alaskan Salmon Stream. You can also read the research abstract, here.
Research results from the 2003 - 2004 field seasons were submitted to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in a Performance Report. These documents provide many management recommendations for state and local governing entities.
